Do you screen for skin cancer? What is the cost? 17. May 2017

Thanks for your question!  Yes!  We perform thorough skin examinations to screen for skin cancers and atypical moles.  Part of a thorough skin exam is also taking a good medical history and discussing risk factors for skin cancer.  This plan is tailored to the individual patient.  Our Knoxville and Lenoir City offices accept most insurance plans.  It is best to give the office a call to discuss insurance coverage or other payment options in greater detail!

I have a cyst my skin. It’s benign, been there for some years, but i notice it and do not like it being there. Is this something that you can safely remove? 12. April 2017

Thank you for your question.  At Anderson and Rahman Dermatology in Knoxville, Tennessee and Lenoir City, Tennessee, our dermatologists are skilled in assessing the best therapy for cysts of the skin.  Cysts are benign growths under the skin that may enlarge over time, like a water balloon expanding.  They are not dangerous, but may occasionally become inflamed, infected, or rupture.  These changes can lead to pain and scarring.  Although it is not necessary to remove all cysts, if a cyst is enlarging or has a history of becoming inflamed, removal should be considered.  It is best to excise cysts when they are not inflamed although incision and drainage can be helpful for an acutely painful and inflamed cyst.  The dermatologic physicians and physician extenders at Anderson and Rahman Dermatology can help you determine if removal of the cyst is the best option in your case.

Do you offer acutane treatment for acne? 12. April 2017

Yes!  At Anderson and Rahman Dermatology in Knoxville and Lenoir City, we routinely treat scarring and refractory acne with isotretinoin therapy.  The medication has been approved by the FDA as a treatment for severe acne since 1982.  A six month course of the medication can be a cure for cystic acne.  The medication is regulated by FDA with the iPledge program to educate patients and prevent women from becoming pregnant while on the therapy.  With these regulations, the medication couse is monitored very carefully with monthly dermatology office visits.  There are some nuisance side effects of the acne medication, like dry skin and chapped lips, that we are able to manage.  All of our dermatologic physicians and nurse practioners are skilled in monitoring for any systemic side effects from the acne medication.

If you are suffering from persistent or scarring acne, we are happy to help you determine if a course of isotretinoin is right for you.

Do u do the blue light therapy and what is the cost and does ins. Cover it 3. April 2017

Thank you for your question.  At Anderson and Rahman Dermatology, we offer photodynamic therapy at both Knoxville and Lenoir City Dermatology locations.  Blue light treatments are an excellent way to target precancerous keratoses, actinic keratoses, with minimal discomfort and down time.   A photosensitizing gel, Levulan, is applied to the skin.  After 1-3 hours of incubation, the skin is treated under the Blu-U Blue Light Box that emits blue visible light.  This blue wavelength activates the Levulan and targets the precancerous cells that have absorbed it.  Most patients have mild tingling sensation during the treatment and a sunburn-like redness and discomfort for 2-3 days after treatment.  The skin may peel, often taking 10-14 days to come back to normal.

Insurance often covers photodynamic therapy for actinic keratoses.  We can help you confirm your insurance coverage and determine what your out of pocket costs will be for the procedure.  Please call us at 865-450-9361 to learn more.
